How I got started in Triathlon.
When I was 9, I saw Paula Newby Fraser win ironman Hawaii on TV. From that moment on, I knew what I wanted to be an ironman.
What’s the best triathlon advice someone ever gave you?
To be patient. Especially with Ironman distance racing and training. Nothing happens fast in an ironman. You don’t lose or make up time fast. You don’t prepare fast. It’s a commitment both mental and physical and it requires patience.
What's the worst triathlon advice someone ever gave you?
All you need are gels during an ironman.
What has been your most challenging race experience?
Ironman Cozumel in 2014. I went in assuming I was going to get a massive PR and a Kona spot and what actually happened was so far from what I expected. I got a strange cramp in my left hip in the first hour of the bike that had me continually stop and stretch, followed by a tough marathon of run/walking. The toughest part was the disappointment I had to deal with internally. Externally the course was beautiful and flat.
What advice would you offer to age-groupers who wish to improve in the sport of triathlon?
Triathlon is exciting. There is no shortage of people doing it, no shortage of training and technological advances, no shortage of things to buy, blogs to read, numbers to analyze. My advice is to let the excitement energize and inspire you but don’t get too hung up on what everyone else is doing, wearing, eating, riding, etc. You know yourself so trust your training and your judgment and for goodness sake, enjoy the journey.
